Quality Infill Development — creating liveable affordable rental housing:

The homeowner had faced the challenges of the private rental market for many years, frequently moving and dealing with rising rents. After becoming a homeowner they were motivated to support an older women to enjoy secure and affordable housing “because I could so easily have been that person.”

Vision:

Use backyard space to develop a secondary dwelling that could be used for affordable housing and more specifically for an older woman who would otherwise not be housed.

Guiding Priorities:

  • Cost-neutral to owner
  • Privacy for both residences
  • Accessibility
  • Energy efficiency
  • Affordability
  • Liveability
  • Targeted cohort

The homeowner collaborated closely with Housing Matters to find a resident for their secondary dwelling, ultimately deciding to offer it to a local woman who is awaiting the completion of the RFBI’s affordable housing development, scheduled to be available in early 2025.
