Firefly Hamlet — shared ownership & cohousing infill initiative:

Innovative approaches to housing often require creative use of existing planning, legal, and financial tools.

The Firefly Hamlet residents are a case in point, with their creative use of Torrens Title in order to realise their cohousing goals.

Cohousing encourages affordability, security, sharing and community building, while recognising that residents also want privacy, security and financial autonomy.

Guiding Priorities:

  • Co-creating an adaptable home as our circumstances change incl as we age
  • Founded in shared values
  • Minimal environmental impact
  • Structured to provide secure homes for current & future residents

Using a staged approach, the Firefly residents modified a standard suburban block by retrofitting the existing home into two flats. Plus building a detached cottage to create three private residences and multiple shared common spaces.
