Kalang Lodge — Privately owned and operated affordable housing initiative in the Bellingen Shire:

Local Solutions:

Two Bellingen families who specialise in property development saw the need to create privately owned and operated affordable housing in the Bellingen Shire targeting (primarily) single mature vulnerable women.

Vision:

Creating sustainable affordable housing in the Bellingen Shire.

Guiding Priorities:

  • Conversion of an existing motel (short term accom) into a boarding house offering longer term affordable accommodation.
  • Secure DA approval to replace the existing 8 room motel with a 14 room ‘new generation’ boarding house type facility.
  • Emphasis placed on creating a sense of community in both existing, smaller facility as well as new facility once constructed.
  • Housing Matters Action Group was consulted for feedback on local needs assessment, boarding room layout and appropriate facility requirements.

A Shared Vision:

They engaged Innerchi Studios who shared their vision that more affordable housing could be created in the Bellingen Shire through ethical and sustainable developments. This ‘New Generation’ Boarding house will create 14 rooms of affordable housing for local residents of high need. Whilst each room is nearly fully self-contained, emphasis has been placed on designing an atmosphere of a small village community.
